NBA 2K21: How To Building A Competitive MyTeam Squad On A Budget

Similar to NBA 2k20, you can also build a competitive MyTeam squad on a budget in NBA 2K21, but this requires some skill. Here, we have some ways to become more competitive in MyTeam without spending too much money to get the necessary cards.

NBA 2K21

• Free Players

As with every trading card mode, there is a seemingly endless collection of players. Each player has several versions, there are different programs of cards throughout the season, each with their own focusses. This can all be complicated by what type of team you want to assemble.

That being the case, it is easier to know which attributes you'll want to target. Each player has a host of attributes that affect the game in different ways, but certain ones make a bigger impact. These are the ones we believe make the biggest impact for your MyTEAM regardless of your style.

No price is better than free, and NBA 2K20 gives you a few options for free players. We expect plenty of the same with NBA 2K21. The first option is locker codes for individual players. MyTEAM has several temporary locker codes to unlock major players. Right now the 98 overall Pink Diamond Kobe Bryant is free using the locker code KOBE-JHE93-J987G-PWEHD.

• Free Packs

Along with free players NBA 2K20 has had plenty of free packs. We expect this to stick around for NBA 2K21 as well. Whether attached to events or temporary locker codes, you can probably find a free pack or two at any time. These packs could help give you the talent you need to compete.

As long as you keep up to date on temporary locker code goodies, you can stack up against your team for the cost of nothing at all.

• Unlockable players

NBA 2K20 has plenty of different routes for unlocking players, and most come without any cost if you have the time. While there might not be many for NBA 2K21's MyTEAM on release, they should filter in overtime.

Spotlight Challenges can be found under weekly challenges and are great for earning rewards of multiple types.

Some of the challenges are well...challenging. However, playing through them will render some valuable cards. The latest Spotlight Challenge has the best rewards in the mode.

Currently, there are five separate threads of Spotlight Challenges which each reward an Evolution version of the spotlight player (Dwayne Wade, Kevin Garnett, Clyde Drexler, Dirk Nowitzki, Isiah Thomas), two other players, 24,500 MT and nine tokens.

The challenges escalate in difficulty, but offer immediate rewards to improve your team as you go.

Spotlight Challenges

The best player to unlock right now for free is Galaxy Opal Kobe Bryant, who can be earned by completing Kobe's Spotlight Sim and Historic Spotlight Sim.

Beyond challenges, you can also unlock players by collecting. You can collect 10 players from each tier set to unlock the next tier via tokens. You can also unlock players by collecting specific numbers of players, all the way up to Galaxy Opal level players.

• Marketplace value

Some players are easier to unlock or open than others, but if you don't have the time to work to get them, the community market is your friend.

Through the community marketplace, you can purchase cards that can sometimes over-perform their worth. Since cost is really just attached to accessibility and not talent, there are some hidden gems for quite cheap.

A few of these cheaper players that can outperform their costs are Dan Majerle, Pink Diamond Shaquille O'Neal, and the infamous Ruby Thon Maker. Cards like Ruby Thon have returned year after year as a quality budget pickup, so you can expect this to keep up for NBA 2K21.

• How to grow

Once you've established a lineup with enough talent to take games consistently, the real grind begins.

Each year the meta in MyTeam is a little different.

This year, swingmen with length, shooting, and the ability to finish at the hoop ar the most valuable kinds of cards. Be sure to target those kinds of players for Triple Threat Online and MyTeam Unlimited matches.

MyTeam Unlimited

The best players will have the ability to dominate with the likes of Galaxy Opal Michael Jordan, Tracy McGrady, and others. Any of the Pink Diamond or even Diamond versions of Giannis Antetokounmpo are invaluable because of his versatility.

To earn more VC and MT you'll want to play daily whenever possible. Every day there are challenges you can complete for decent rewards. In NBA 2K20, if you play for seven days in a row you'll get a chance to spin the wheel and this is where the rewards really lie. We expect plenty of the same with NBA 2K21.

Granted it's not like you'll be swimming in VC and MT by playing every day. But that little bit adds up and you'll find yourself being able to make smart purchases at least once a week.

Make sure that you take note of the challenges you face, daily, weekly, or monthly. These offer big-time rewards for only the cost of adjusting your lineup while playing. More avenues for mt and packs are always going to help.

Also, All of the modes give you an opportunity to evolve your Evolution cards. Be sure to take advantage of evolution cards and item upgrades along the way so you're getting the best out of your lineup, even on a budget.

• Play to your team's strengths

To succeed in MyTEAM you need to know your team inside and out. That's the ultimate way to improve your game without spending a single mt.

If you like the perimeter game, you should focus on trying to get players like Ray Allen, someone who has an amazing shot but can also play well in other aspects of the game too. But that comes at a cost early on in MyTeam, that being a tradeoff.

You won't have enough resources to spend on every position, and unless you get lucky during pulls, you will probably be stuck with at least one player that is below average on the court. That isn't a bad thing, every player has a strength, but you should spend your time building to your strengths early, and not try to build an overall solid roster – that will put you smack into a mediocre team.

In that regard, you should also try to unlock the Auction House early, that way you can sell the cards you don't like and use those resources to invest into ones you can use to get better.

Managing 5 matchups and all the ways they can change with bench players is the hidden challenge to NBA 2K games.

Master this, and it doesn't matter how weak your lineup's stats really are.

• Core Skills, Animations and Attributes Matter More Than Overall Ratings

Three-point shooting, perimeter and post defense, Clamps and Range Extender badges are the most valuable assets for any card.

If the player you're looking at has the attributes, animations, and badges you want, they can be more effective than a card with a higher gem and overall rating.

Focus on what matters the most, and believe it or not, it's not the overall rating.

• Be Wise When Deciding Whether to Complete Sets?

Completing sets in MyTeam can be fun, but ask yourself, do I really need or want the reward that is being offered, and is there a card in this set that is expendable?

Once you complete a set and redeem the reward, you can't sell the card in the collection. If the reward isn't worth you giving up that flexibility, it's best to refrain from claiming the prize.

• Play Everything

I highly encourage you to play every game within the MyTeam mode, at least a little bit. There's no part of the model that gives you as many cards as Domination. Triple Threat is great for quick-hitting action with solid rewards and a chance to score big in the vault.

Triple Threat Online gives you the quick-hitting online action with rewards from ball drops, while MyTeam Unlimited is the ultimate head-to-head experience in MyTeam with the potential to gain more than 1,000 MT per contest.

All of the modes give you an opportunity to evolve your Evolution cards. It pays to be diverse.
