Will Zion Williamson and Kobe Bryant As The NBA 2K21 Cover?

Following up on the next-gen trailer reveal with the New Orleans Pelicans' Zion Williamson that was revealed last week, there was a wave of speculation among players in the 2K community about who will be the NBA 2k21 cover athlete. Here, I also expressed my personal views, which is as follows:

NBA 2K21 Cover: Will Zion Williamson as the next Cover Athlete?

Zion Williamson

On Thursday, NBA 2K21 dropped its first teaser video, announcing the game would be released in fall 2020 — right on schedule despite the coronavirus pandemic.

The teaser showed a sweaty Zion Williamson, who introduced the teaser with a real-life video moments before.

Immediate speculation began that Williamson will grace the cover of NBA 2K21. While it is also possible that NBA 2K21 cover has a different player on the front or there could be multiple players too. But Zion Williamson is the most probable name that will feature as the NBA 2K21 cover athlete at the moment.

Zion Williamson is a popular NBA figure even before his debut in the league as he was featured in NBA 2K20 game without playing a single game. It was not that much of a shock considering Williamson was the No. 1 pick in the NBA 2019 draft for the Pelicans.

He appeared in 19 games for the Pelicans in 2019-20 before the season was suspended in March. The former Duke superstar put up 23.6 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 58.9 percent from the field, 46.2 percent from beyond the arc, and 64.5 percent from the free-throw line.

It does make sense to have Zion Williamson be one of the cover athletes for the game. The Pelicans forward figures to be one of the faces of the NBA for the next decade or so assuming he stays healthy.

If chosen, Williamson would be the youngest player to appear on the cover.

NBA 2K21 Cover: Will Kobe Bryant be the Cover of the Legend Edition?

Kobe Bryant

It has been an ongoing theory that the Black Mamba will be the Legend Edition choice for NBA 2k21 since Kobe Bryant's tragic passing in January.

Needless to say, none of this comes as a surprise given the fact that Kobe Bryant is one of the greatest players ever to have stepped on a basketball court. This absolute legend of the game and a role model to many upcoming stars in the league, as well as to countless ballers worldwide - professional or amateur, deserves every bit of respect and recognition that he has received thus far.

With Bryant part of the league since the 1996 season, he became a regular within the NBA 2K basketball game series. For the NBA 2K10 edition, he graced the game’s cover for the first time as the title’s featured star. For that particular cover, fans voted on which Kobe image would go on the front.

Seven years later, Kobe was on another 2K cover. This time he was featured on the NBA 2K17 Legends edition since he had just retired from the game.

2K are no strangers to putting the same player on the cover of different iterations of NBA 2K. So, it would make all the sense in the world to allow Bryant to be on the cover again. It's safe to say there's a strong case in favor of a third-time appearance for Bryant.

Also, in the second video of the trailer, Simmons says, "man and they got (censored) on the cover?" That sounds like the reaction to seeing The Black Mamba revealed for some sort of legends edition.

With all of the above information, we predict Zion Williamson will be the cover athlete for the Standard Edition of NBA 2K21, and Kobe Bryant will take the cover for the Legend Edition.

At the time of writing, NBA 2K21's cover has not been announced, but in keeping with past practice, it will be released next month, so you can check out the latest news at https://www.u4gm.com/nba-2k21-mt.
